An outdoor space that blurs the lines between out and in, new and old
The owners of this Manhattan Beach, CA, Mediterranean-style home had but one request for their new outdoor space—that it be conducive to entertaining. A laid-back couple completely in tune with the relaxed atmosphere of their beach community, the clients were open to the ideas of designer Sandy Koepke, of Sandy Koepke Interior Design, who transformed their "sad, damp plot of sod" into a multipurpose space fit for year-round entertaining. In a family-focused California kitchen, less is definitely more
Sitting on 7.66 acres amid the rolling hills of the sunny Southern California city of Rancho Santa Fe, the Malaga home is an architectural sight to behold. A contemporary kitchen with a hint of mint
As many designers will tell you, color is the perfect way to bring a touch of personality to any space. Not only does it readily liven up the design, but when thoughtfully chosen with the client in mind, color can make what would otherwise be an ordinary room, a room of one's own. This is particularly true in the kitchen, where, more than ever before, an abundance of stainless steel, combined with neutral-toned cabinets, can yield (do I dare say it?) a drab and even dull result. Yes, the monochromatic look that has become synonymous with the modern look can be elegant in all its unfettered glory and alluring to the contemporary homeowner (and to a magazine editor!), but sometimes, just sometimes, it begs for something more. After all, it all starts to look alike, a bit devoid of individual style. MORE »

A couple's new kitchen is inspired by its natural surroundings
Northern California's sky-high redwoods, crystal-clear waters and stunning mountains are about as dramatic a backdrop as a homeowner could hope for. So, when it came time for builder Chris Chapek's clients—a couple in their 50s with one child and a large extended family—to update their 30-year-old kitchen, the design inspiration naturally came from the home's idyllic surroundings. In this Omaha kitchen, zoning is the key to warmth and hospitality
It's not everyday that a client asks for a kitchen capable of entertaining 100 people. But after a fire on the floor below damaged their 5,000-sq.-ft. penthouse, a couple in Omaha, NE, did just that. Their request was part of a larger renovation that gutted their entire apartment, allowing them to start from scratch. And while a fire is never a pleasant experience to recover from, in the kitchen, it gave the couple an opportunity to address shortcomings in the original space and create an environment better suited to their lifestyle. An empty-nester couple begins a new chapter with a kitchen remodel
The kids are grown and have left home. Suddenly, your house seems a little too big, a little too empty. What do you do? For a couple in Dallas, the answer was to pull up roots and begin life anew in a luxury condo high up on the 20th floor. At 2,450 sq. ft., their new home boasts ample space for two and a 100-sq.-ft. terrace that overlooks Dallas' scenic and upscale Turtle Creek area. To ensure a fresh start, the couple hired an architect, who gutted the condo and reconfigured its layout to better suit their needs. In doing so, he also cleared the way for a brand new, 234-sq.-ft. kitchen created by Helene Terry, of Capital Distributing. MORE »
