A penthouse bathroom in Miami gives a bird's eye view of the city
Rising 70 stories and 780 ft. above downtown Miami, the Four Seasons Hotel and Tower claims the city's most expansive views, which stretch from downtown to South Beach and the barrier islands. The building, which was completed in 2004, includes 186 residences, a 221-room hotel, a 30,000-sq.-ft. sports club and a two-acre outdoor recreation area with swimming pools and landscaped grounds. | Faux Factor
A mixture of materials creates a true retreat
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, it might just also be the sincerest form of flattering. You see, in this remodeled master bathroom, the thoughtful addition of faux materials, namely the stonework, is an ideal complement to the real thing, creating a space that is not only visually cohesive but one that is soft and nurturing—a place to feel good and look good. "This is truly an 'escape spot' for the homeowners," said Atlanta-based designer Jackie Naylor in describing the intimate space she created for her client and friend. "There's a feminine feel to it, insofar as it's warm, serene and comforting, but it's far from frilly. It worked for the wife, but in no way alienated her husband." And as any designer would agree, satisfying both parties is often half the challenge. MORE »

A hurricane-damaged master bath gets a sunny makeover
Hurricane Ivan pummeled the Florida panhandle in 2004, doing serious damage to the home of a Gulf Breeze family. And while some would shudder at memories of crashing waves and a turbulent blue sea, for this beach-loving family, it was just the opposite. They turned to designer Cheryl Kees Clendenon not only to repair the damage, but also to turn their master bathroom into a true tropical beach getaway. MORE »

In Washington State, a warm master retreat is bathed in natural light
Just as too many cooks in the kitchen may be a recipe for disaster, the same can be true when two designers work on one project. If you're not careful, it can be a potentially hazardous situation. But as Scott Hommas, lead architect and principal of Gelotte Hommas Architecture in Kirkland, WA, and Linda Nohavec, ASID, owner of Lake Street Studios in Bellevue, WA, have learned, the right mixture can lead to something delicious. Asian-inspired details transform a master bath into a peaceful retreat
Creating the space of one's dreams is easy if you start from scratch. But without a fresh palette, it can take a bit more creativity, imagination and vision. When a San Diego physician and his wife decided it was time to upgrade to a larger home, they turned to local designer Sy John Iverson, of Inside Story, to formulate a plan that would turn the good bones of their master bathroom into a space truly customized for them. Having worked with Iverson through a past remodel, the couple relied on his experience, determination and attention to detail to give them a luxuriously comfortable new space where they could unwind. The spa-like bathroom of a Denver spec house charms its buyers
When it comes to building a spec house, the lack of a client can be both a help and a hindrance. "On one hand, we had a lot of creative license and were able to put a lot of money into the kitchen and bathrooms, which is not always something you get to do when you're working with homeowners on a remodel," said Gail Doby, president and principal designer of Denver-based Renaissance Design. "However, you also have to visualize not just a client, but a buyer—you want to create something bold and memorable, but also universally appealing." Rising to the challenge, Doby and the developer agreed on a European-inspired design for the home, which is especially prevalent in the master bath—one of nine bathrooms in this 12,000-sq.-ft. house, which was listed at $4.65 million. Old Hollywood glamour sets the stage for a modern man's luxurious retreat
As a 20-year veteran in the design trade, Christy Schneider is quite used to translating her clients' emotions and desires into carefully orchestrated spaces. So when the well-heeled son of a Spanish ambassador to Indonesia and a patrician of the old South came to Mariposa Design Group, Inc., in Dana Point, CA, and requested what he called a "gentleman's retreat," Schneider fearlessly stepped up to the plate. The result is a powerful, masculine bath with lavish materials and luxurious amenities, with just the right amount of softness around the edges. MORE »
